About

Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S is from a group of medicines called anticoagulants. Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S contains apixaban as the active ingredient. Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S helps to prevent blood clots from forming by blocking Factor Xa which is an important component of blood clotting. Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S comes in oral form.

Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S is used in patients for the prevention of venous thromboembolic events. Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S is also used to treat events such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms. Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S may cause side effects such as bleeding from the nose, gums, urine, or the rectum. Anemia, hypotension, and nausea are also some common side effects. 

Indications 

Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S can be used to

  • reduction of risk of stroke and systemic embolism
  • prophylaxis of deep vein thrombosis following hip or knee replacement surgery 
  • treatment of deep vein thrombosis
  • treatment of pulmonary embolism
  • reduction in the risk of recurrence of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism

How Does Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S Work

Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S is a potent, oral, reversible selective active site inhibitor of factor Xa. Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S does not require antithrombin III for antithrombotic activity. Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S hinders free and clot-bound factor Xa and prothrombinase activity. Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S has no direct effects on platelet aggregation, but indirectly inhibits platelet aggregation induced by thrombin.

How To Use Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S

 Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S comes in tablet form and can be swallowed with a drink of water. Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S can be taken with or without food. 

Dosage

The recommended dosage is

  • For most patients is 5 mg taken orally every 12 hours
  • The recommended dose of Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S is 2.5 mg every 12 hours in patients with at least two of the following factors: age greater than or equal to 80 years, body weight less than or equal to 60 kg, serum creatinine greater than or equal to 1.5 mg/dL
  • For patients who are unable to swallow 5 mg and 2.5 mg Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S, the tablets may be crushed and suspended in water, 5% dextrose in water, or apple juice, and taken orally

Prophylaxis of Deep Vein Thrombosis Following Hip or Knee Replacement Surgery 

  • The recommended dose of Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S is 2.5 mg taken orally every 12 hours
  • The initial dose of Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S should be taken 12 to 24 hours after surgery
  • In patients undergoing hip replacement surgery, the recommended duration of treatment is 35 days
  • In patients undergoing knee replacement surgery, the recommended duration of treatment is 12 days

Treatment of DVT and PE 

  • the recommended dose of Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S is 10 mg taken orally every 12 hours for the first 7 days of therapy
  • after 7 days, the recommended dose is 5 mg taken every 12 hours 

Reduction in the Risk of Recurrence of DVT and PE 

  • the recommended dose of Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S is 2.5 mg taken every 12 hours after at least 6 months of treatment for DVT or PE

Pregnancy and Lactation

There are not enough studies about Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S in pregnant women. Treatment increases the risk of hemorrhage during pregnancy and delivery. Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S should only be consumed during pregnancy if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the mother and fetus. 

It is unknown if Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S or its metabolites are excreted in human milk. Women should consult their doctor to discontinue the Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S or to discontinue breastfeeding. 

Contraindications

Inform your doctor if you have a history of any of the following before using Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S:

  • hypersensitivity to the active substance
  • active clinically significant bleeding including bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract
  • hepatic disease associated with coagulopathy and clinically relevant bleeding
  • concomitant systemic treatment with HIV protease inhibitors, e.g., ritonavir
  • concomitant treatment with any other anticoagulant, including unfractionated heparin, low molecular weight heparins, and oral anticoagulants, such as warfarin and dabigatran rivaroxaban.

Inform your doctor about any of the following conditions before using Apiban 5mg Tablet 10 ‘S

  • an increased risk of bleeding, such as bleeding disorders, very high blood pressure, you are older than 75 years, you weigh 60 kg or less
  • severe kidney disease or if you are on dialysis
  • liver problem or a history of liver problems
  • if you have a prosthetic heart valve
  • if your doctor determines that your blood pressure is unstable

How To Cope With Adverse Effects

Anemia – Pale skin, fatigue, weakness, and disturbed appetite are signs of anemia. To counter anemia, eat iron-rich food such as beef, salmon, cereals, liver, dry fruits, and leafy vegetables. A good night’s sleep and light exercise daily to improve blood flow.

Dizziness – Do not get up or change your position all of a sudden. Get up slowly and steadily. Increase your fluid intake to stay energetic and refrain from coffee, smoking, alcohol, and addictive drugs.

Nausea – Eat light, spicy foods sparingly, and stay away from high-sugar foods. Rather than one large meal, eat several smaller ones. Slowly chew your food and consume smaller, more frequent meals. Driving and playing should be avoided immediately after eating. If you vomit, drink plenty of water at regular intervals.
