Hydrocortisone 1% Cream 5 gm belongs to a class of topical medicines that is Steroids and is prescribed for the treatment of several inflammatory skin conditions causing redness, swelling, and itching. Hydrocortisone 1% Cream 5 gm is available in the form of cream, meant for external use only. 

How Does Hydrocortisone 1% Cream 5 gm Work

Hydrocortisone 1% Cream 5 gm work by interfering with the production of inflammation-causing chemicals, by inhibiting the production pathways of these chemicals like interleukins. By preventing the inflammatory mediators from carrying out the process, Hydrocortisone 1% Cream 5 gm can aid in the reduction of inflammation, swelling, and pain experienced by the patient. 

Dosing and Indications

Hydrocortisone 1% Cream 5 gm can be used to treat:

  • Dermatitis 
  • Eczema 
  • Inflammatory dermatoses 
  • Neurodermatitis

Adult Dose

A small amount of Hydrocortisone 1% Cream 5 gm taken out on fingertips is rubbed over just enough to cover the affected area and applied externally 2 to 3 times a day. It should form a thin even coat.

Child Dose

Smaller amounts should be applied to a child’s body due to height and physique differences in thin coats over the affected area.

Elderly Dose

Regarding the dosage for the elderly, caution should be advised, and follow your doctor’s prescription. 

How To Use Hydrocortisone 1% Cream 5 gm

Hydrocortisone 1% Cream 5 gm is available in the form of cream meant for external use only to be applied topically with clean hands after cleaning the affected area properly and gently drying afterward. Hydrocortisone 1% Cream 5 gm is safe for use in adults and children both as directed by the doctor. A small amount of {{product} is taken out on fingertips and gently rub it in to form a thin, even coat over the affected area. Wash your hands after application and avoid wrapping the area with a bandage so as not to wipe it out. 

Side Effects

Inform your healthcare supervisor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  •  Anaphylactic reaction
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Dryness of skin 
  • Flaky skin
  • Tingling/ burning sensation at the site of application
  • Headache 
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness 
  • Blistering
  • Adrenal suppression (when used in large amounts for longer periods)
  • Temporary exacerbation of symptoms
  • High intraocular pressure in eyes (if used in large amounts / near the eye)
  • Conjunctivitis 


Please tell your doctor if you have a history of any of the following before using Hydrocortisone 1% Cream 5 gm:

  • As monotherapy in primary bacterial infections of the skin 
  • Allergy to Hydrocortisone 1% Cream 5 gm 
  • Skin lesions due to viral infection (for example herpes)
  • Skin lesions due to fungal infection (for example athlete’s foot)
  • Perioral dermatitis (around the mouth)

  • If there is a history of allergy to medicines
  • Hydrocortisone 1% Cream 5 gm may initially cause itching, redness, or dryness of the skin
  • Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly after application, avoid getting ‌Hydrocortisone 1% Cream 5 gm in your eyes
  • Do not use ‌Hydrocortisone 1% Cream 5 gm for long durations, if there is no noticeable difference in your condition after a week contact your doctor
  • If ‌Hydrocortisone 1% Cream 5 gm was prescribed for prolonged use by the doctor, it may put you at risk of infections or slow wound healing due to immunosuppression, take precautions accordingly 
  • Avoid applying to open wounds or cracked skin except if advised by the doctor
  • Avoid applying to sensitive parts like inside the nose, mouth or around the mouth, genitals
