About

Celewin Capsule ‘S belongs to a class of drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) which are used for moderate to severe pain relief alone or in combination. It also helps in combating signs of inflammation including swelling, stiffness, tenderness, and pain in conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, dysmenorrhea, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and muscle pain.  

Celewin Capsule ‘S is chemically composed of Celecoxib, which particularly inhibits COX-2, unlike other NSAIDs that are non-specific inhibitors of COX 1 and 2. These work by blocking inflammatory mediators and reducing pain and swelling. NSAIDs carry an increased risk of side effects on gastrointestinal including ulceration, bleeding, etc. Celewin Capsule ‘S must not be prescribed to people with long-standing heart disease due to the potential risk of myocardial infarction.

Celewin Capsule ‘S is available in form of capsules to be taken orally or as prescribed by the doctor. Commonly it is prescribed once or twice a day, to be taken with or without food. Alternatively, powdered medicine filled in the capsule can be emptied on food if you have difficulty swallowing the entire capsule. Celewin Capsule ‘S is not safe to be used in children under 18 years of age and pregnant women. The most common side effects of Celewin Capsule ‘S include diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, and abdominal pain. Kindly note it can cause serious complications if taken more than the safe dose. Overdosing or unmonitored self-medication can cause serious side effects. Even in case of severe pain, do not double the dose or increase the prescribed dosage without a doctor’s consultation.

How does Celewin Capsule ‘S work

Celewin Capsule ‘S works by blocking the production of prostaglandins, a major group of chemicals involved in inflammation. Prostaglandins are naturally occurring substance in the body that helps carry out inflammatory responses in the body when needed. By preventing prostaglandins from carrying out the inflammatory process, Celewin Capsule ‘S can in the reduction of inflammation, swelling, and pain experienced by the patient.

How To Use Celewin Capsule ‘S

Celewin Capsule ‘S is available in form of capsules to be taken orally by swallowing, once or twice daily, or as directed by the doctor. It is advised to have Celewin Capsule ‘S with food if it causes an upset stomach. If you find it difficult to swallow the capsule, you can open the capsule and empty contents in your food of semi-solid consistency such as porridge, cereal, mashed potato/ banana, or yogurt, and eat it. Celewin Capsule ‘S may have to be taken twice a day, in which case the patient is advised to take the doses at the same time each day to ensure sustained levels of medicine in your body.

If you miss a dose of the medication, make sure you take it as soon as possible on that same day. If you don’t remember you missed the dose until the next dose time or the next day, do not double the dose and take your medication as per schedule. Celewin Capsule ‘S must be used with caution in patients with gut and heart problems.

Dosage

It is advised to start the treatment with a minimally effective dose, to be increased up to 400 mg if needed (do not take more than 400 mg). Please consult your doctor at once if there is no noticeable difference in your symptoms. 

Adult Dosage

These doses are generally recommended for the following conditions:

Rheumatoid arthritis: 100 – 200 mg, twice daily

Osteoarthritis: 100 mg twice a day, or 200 mg once a day

Ankylosing spondylitis: 100 mg twice a day, or 200 mg once a day

Dysmenorrhea: 200 mg twice daily, may be increased

Acute Pain: 400 mg once as starting dose, lower the dose to 200 mg twice a day

Pediatric Dose

Celewin Capsule ‘S is not prescribed to children and adolescents under 18 years of age

Elderly Dose

Doses must be adjusted when treating the elderly population (above 65 years of age). Moreover, Celewin Capsule ‘S is processed majorly by the liver, therefore while administering the drug to elderly patients careful consideration must be given to liver and renal function while deciding upon the dose, especially if the elderly are underweight (less than 50 kgs). 

Pregnancy Use And Lactation

 Celewin Capsule ‘S is classified as a pregnancy category C (up to 3rd trimester)) and D (towards the end of the 3rd trimester) drug meaning there is an increased risk of harmful effects to the fetus, it is known to cause heart defects in babies. If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to conceive a baby, please do not use it before consulting your doctor before using Celewin Capsule ‘S. If it is accessary to take Celewin Capsule ‘S, your doctor may advise you to start contraception. 

Celewin Capsule ‘S is also secreted in human milk in minute quantity, if you are breastfeeding, please consult your doctor before taking Celewin Capsule ‘S. 

Contraindications

Please tell your doctor if you have a history of any of the following before using Celewin Capsule ‘S:

  • Allergy to Celewin Capsule ‘S or similar drugs or sulfonamide antibiotics 
  • Asthmatics (aspirin associated asthma)
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding/perforation
  • Gastric ulceration 
  • Inflammatory disease of the gut like colitis, Crohn’s disease
  • Severe kidney impairment/ failure
  • Severe liver impairment/ failure
  • Chronic heart disease 
  • History of or a scheduled Coronary Artery Bypass Graft surgery
  • Pregnancy 

Precautions

Please tell your doctor about any of the following conditions before using Celewin Capsule ‘S

  • Asthmatic patients should avoid taking Celewin Capsule ‘S without medical supervision
  • Mild to moderate heart condition may aggravate without any forewarning signs, make sure to consult a doctor first before taking Celewin Capsule ‘S
  • NSAIDs are likely to elevate blood pressure, it is advised to monitor your B.P when taking Celewin Capsule ‘S
  • If you have a history of ulcers or bleeding ulcers, inform your doctor first before using the drug
  • If you are taking blood thinners like warfarin, monitor your PT, carefully it may increase your chance to bleed
  • Use of other regular NSAIDs like ibuprofen, and naproxen should be avoided concurrently with Celewin Capsule ‘S
  • Please be careful if you have diabetes, hypercholesterolemia or you are a heavy smoker
  • Alcohol consumption must be avoided with Celewin Capsule ‘S
  • When treating elderly patients with Celewin Capsule ‘S, the dosage is set carefully to avoid side effects
  • In case of a pregnancy, or if you are planning to conceive a baby/ breastfeeding before starting Celewin Capsule ‘S always ask your doctor first

LIST OF HOW TO DEAL WITH ADVERSE EFFECTS.

  • Fatigue – Patients experiencing this adverse effect, are advised to take deep breaths, intake tea or coffee, get a good night’s rest, and not overburden themselves for a few days.
  • Headaches – In which case make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Avoid the use of alcohol. Take a prescribed painkiller. Consult your doctor if the headaches last longer than a week or are severe
  • Feeling or being sick (nausea or vomiting) or diarrhea – Avoid eating rich or spicy food. It might help to take medication after food. If you’re sick, try drinking small, frequent sips of water.
  • Feeling dizzy (lightheaded) or weak – If the medication makes you feel dizzy or weak, stop what you’re doing and sit or lie down until you feel better, and do not rise too fast or immediately from sitting or lying down position to a standing posture. Do not drive or use tools or machinery in case of any of these effects.
  • Heartburn – This can be dealt with by chewing on mint-flavored gum that’ll help neutralize the acid in the body. Standing up straighter, adding ginger to the daily diet, elevating the patient’s upper body, and having licorice supplements has shown to provide relief.
  • Skin Rash – This can be eased by applying soothing and healing lotions or creams such as calamine lotion/cream. Apply a cold compress to the rash to help reduce itchiness and redness caused by the rash. An antihistamine (prescribed by a doctor) is also recommended as an effective way to combat any skin rash.
  • Flu-like symptoms – To manage symptoms, patients are advised to drink plenty of fluids and get plenty of rest and sleep. Take an antihistamine, a nasal decongestant, or a lozenge to feel better when needed.
  • Redness Of The Skin – This can be combated by applying a cold pack to the affected area.

Over-the-counter analgesics like paracetamol are safely taken with Celewin Capsule ‘S. However, do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, or diclofenac-based analgesics as these might increase the risk of Gl bleeding.
