Recept 1mg Tablet 10 ‘S belongs to a class of drugs called “atypical antipsychotics” (benzisoxazole derivative) used to treat certain mental/mood disorders (such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, irritability associated with autistic disorder).

Atypical antipsychotics (AAP) are also known as second generation antipsychotics (SGAs) and serotonin-dopamine antagonist (SDAs) are a group of drugs (in general also known as major tranquilizers and neuroleptics) are used to treat psychiatric conditions.

It is available on prescription, as tablets, dispersible tablets, liquid and long acting injection. Recept 1mg Tablet 10 ‘S works by altering the activity of chemical substances in the brain thereby reducing the symptoms of psychosis. Recept 1mg Tablet 10 ‘S helps in shortening the recovery time and prevents relapses.

Dosage of Recept 1mg Tablet 10 ‘S depends on age, severity of condition, patient’s response to medicine and their comorbidities. In children it is also based on their weight.

Indications

It is used in the treatment of:

  • Symptoms of schizophrenia (a mental illness characterised by disturbed or unusual thinking, loss of interest in life, and strong or inappropriate emotions) in adults and teenagers 13 years of age and older.
  • Episodes of mania (frenzied, abnormally excited, or irritated mood) or mixed episodes (symptoms of mania and depression that happen together) in adults and in teenagers. 
  • Bipolar disorder (manic depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other abnormal moods) in adults and children above 10 years of age. 
  • Behavior problems such as aggression, self-injury, and sudden mood changes in teenagers and children between 5 to 16 years of age who have autism (a developmental disorder causing repetitive behavior, difficulty interacting with others and communication problems)

How does Recept 1mg Tablet 10 ‘S work?

How to use Recept 1mg Tablet 10 ‘S?

  • Recept 1mg Tablet 10 ‘S is available as tablets, dispersible tablets/orally disintegrating tablets (tablets that dissolve quickly in the mouth), liquid and long acting injection
  • Recept 1mg Tablet 10 ‘S is usually prescribed to be taken once or twice a day with or without food at around the same time(s) every day. 
  • Take Recept 1mg Tablet 10 ‘S as prescribed by your doctor. 
  • Use the dropper provided to measure your dose for oral solution. It can be taken with water, orange juice, coffee, or low-fat milk. Do not take the solution with tea or cola.
  • Avoid pushing the orally disintegrating tablet through the foil. Instead, peel back the foil packaging using dry hands. Place the tablet on your tongue and it will quickly dissolve and can be swallowed with or without liquid. 
  • Do not chew or crush the tablet.
  • To allow your body to adjust to the medication, your doctor will probably start you on a low dose of risperidone and then gradually increase it with time. 

Dosage

Schizophrenia:

Adults 

  • Initial dose: 2 mg
  • Titrations (increments): 1 to 2 mg
  • Target dose: 4 to 8 mg
  • Effective dose range: 4 to 16 mg

 Adolescents

  • Initial dose: 0.5 mg
  • Titration (increments):0.5 to 1 mg
  • Target dose: 3 mg
  • Effective dose range: 1 to 6 mg

Bipolar mania: 

Adults

  • Initial dose: 2 to 3 mg
  • Titration (increments):  1 mg
  • Target dose:  1 to 6 mg
  • Effective dose range: 1 to 6 mg

Children and adolescents

  • Initial Dose: 0.5 mg
  • Titration (increments): 0.5 to 1 mg
  • Target dose:  1 to 2.5 mg
  • Effective dose range: 1 to 6 mg

Irritability in autistic disorder:

  • Initial dose:  
    • 0.25 mg can increase to 0.5 mg by Day 4: (body weight less than 20 kg) 
    • 0.5 mg Can increase to 1 mg by Day 4: (body weight greater than or equal to 20 kg)
  • Titration (increments): After Day 4, at intervals of > 2 weeks: 
    • 0.25 mg (body weight less than 20 kg) 
    • 0.5 mg (body weight greater than or equal to 20 kg)
  • Target dose: 
    • 0.5 mg: (body weight less than 20 kg) 
    • 1 mg: (body weight greater than or equal to 20 kg)
  • Effective dose range: 0.5 to 3 mg

Doses are modified accordingly if a patient has renal or hepatic impairment.

If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, please consult your doctor before using Recept 1mg Tablet 10 ‘S as it is contraindicated.

Contraindications

  • Allergic reaction to Recept 1mg Tablet 10 ‘S – indicated by skin rash, swelling around face area, wheezing, chest tightness and breathing difficulty

Precautions

Please tell your doctor about any of the following conditions while using Recept 1mg Tablet 10 ‘S:

  • Elderly
  • Renal impairment
  • Hepatic impairment

  • Monitor endocrinological status, sedative effects and for the development of extrapyramidal symptoms and other movement disorders in children. Withdraw gradually.

Interaction with other medications

Certain medications could interact with Recept 1mg Tablet 10 ‘S, hence, in that case your doctor might alter your dosage and make sure to monitor blood sugar levels more closely.

How to cope with some of the adverse effects

  • Nausea (feeling sick) Take Recept 1mg Tablet 10 ‘S with meals to avoid feeling sick.
  • Vomiting/Diarrhoea – Keep yourself hydrated by having lots of fluids and if the problem persists, consult your doctor before taking any medication for vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Loss of appetite – Continue having your meals at times that you would usually have them. If it helps, decrease the portion of your meals and have them more frequently. Snack on high protein food items like fruits and nuts. 
  • Indigestion – Avoid food items that cause wind. Try having smaller and more frequent meals.
  • Headache – Take a painkiller, rest and keep yourself hydrated at all times. Contact your doctor if your headaches last more than a week and/or become severe.
  • Dizziness – Try and rest until you feel better and refrain from driving or using any tools or machinery
  • Mild rash – Use a cream or ointment to moisturise, soothe and hydrate the affected area. If it doesn’t get better in a week contact your doctor.
