Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH is a disease prevalent in men, & characterized by a change in urgency and frequency of urine flow due to prostate enlargement. BPH is more likely to occur in older men (80 to 90%; over 70 years).

Indications

{{Product}} is indicated for the treatment of Symptomatic Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and Acute Urinary Retention (AUR). 

How Does Xatral LP 10mg Tablet 30 ‘S Work

{{Product}} contains the active ingredient “Alfuzosin”, which is a selective Alpha-1 adrenoreceptor blocking agent. Alpha-1 adrenoreceptors are present in the lower region of the urinary bladder, urethra, and prostate. These receptors contract the smooth muscles of their respective region. The active ingredient in Xatral LP 10mg Tablet 30 ‘S opposes this effect and produces smooth muscles relaxation of the prostate and bladder, thereby improving urinary flow and reducing urinary symptoms. {[Product}} does not reduce the size of the prostate, it only causes relaxation of targeted smooth muscles i.e. urethra, bladder neck, and prostate.

How To Use Xatral LP 10mg Tablet 30 ‘S

{{Product}} is available in oral solid dosage form (tablet) that is supposed to get swallowed as a whole, along with food. As the active ingredient is intended to be released in a specified way (sustained-release), so chewing, crushing, and pounding the powder affects the drug release, and hence disturbs its absorption. This in turn reduces efficacy & increases the risk of side effects.

Dosage

The active agent “Alfuzosin” comes as:

• 5mg film-coated sustained-release tablet
• 10mg prolonged-release tablet

Adult Dose

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

• 10mg once daily after a meal 

Acute Urinary Retention 

• 10mg once daily after a meal from the first day of catheterization for 2 to 3 days and after 1 day of removal of the catheter (65 years or older patients)  

Pediatric Dose

{{Product}} is not indicated for use in the pediatric population as the efficacy is not established in children under 18 years of age. 

Pregnancy And Lactation

{{Product}} is not indicated to be used in women. Significant data is not established on risks associated with pregnant or lactating women. 

Contraindications

{{Product}} is contraindicated in the following cases:

• Known hypersensitivity with the active agent or any of the excipients.
• Hepatic impairment (moderate to severe) 
• Co-administration with certain antivirals (e.g. ritonavir) and antifungals (e.g. ketoconazole) 
• In combination with other alpha-1 blocking agents. 
• People with a known history of orthostatic hypertension. 

Precautions

Make sure you take the following precautions before starting treatment with Xatral LP 10mg Tablet 30 ‘S:

• Do not co-administer Xatral LP 10mg Tablet 30 ‘S with blood pressure-lowering medications as the risk of hypotension is increased. 
• Caution should be taken if a person with a history of coronary artery disease, liver disease, orthostatic hypotension, or liver disease has to take Xatral LP 10mg Tablet 30 ‘S
• The first dose of Xatral LP 10mg Tablet 30 ‘S may cause a sudden drop in blood pressure and fainting so the dose should be taken as per the doctor’s suggested method. The person should rest until the symptoms have vanished. 
• Treatment with Xatral LP 10mg Tablet 30 ‘S should be discontinued angina appears or is worsening. 
• In males with prostatic cancer, treatment with alfuzosin should not be started until prostate cancer is not ruled out.
• Caution must be taken in patients with compromised renal function (whose creatinine clearance is less than 30ml/min)
• QT prolongation should be evaluated before and during the treatment with Xatral LP 10mg Tablet 30 ‘S in patients having a history of QT prolongation.
• The tablet must be swallowed as a whole. Crushing or chewing it may lead to undesired release and absorption of the active ingredient and increase the risk of adverse effects.
• People who are on alpha-1-blockers are at high risk of developing Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome during cataract surgery. So the ophthalmic surgeon must be informed if a person has recently been treated with Xatral LP 10mg Tablet 30 ‘S before cataract surgery. 

Interactions With Other Medications

Certain medications may increase the risk of hypotension by synergistic effect or by increasing the concentration of the active ingredient blood if co-administered with Xatral LP 10mg Tablet 30 ‘S. These could be 

• Alpha-1 receptor blockers (e.g. tamsulosin)
• Antifungals (e.g. Itraconazole, voriconazole)
• Antivirals (e.g. Ritonavir) 
• Antibiotics (e.g. Clarithromycin, chloramphenicol) 
• Antidepressants (e.g. Nefazodone, thioridazine)
• Antihypertensives (e.g. nitroglycerines, aldosterone antagonists, spironolactone)
• Medicines used for erectile dysfunction (Sildenafil) 
• Ceritinib

• Dizziness – Do not get up or change your position immediately when you are feeling dizzy. Instead, get up slowly and steadily. Increase your fluid intake to stay energetic, and refrain from coffee, smoking, alcohol, and addicting drugs. 
• Nausea-  Take small and frequent meals, avoid taking heavy meals. Stay in the fresh air, chew peppermint gum, or take peppermint tea. You can also take an anti-emetic if there are episodes of vomiting, after discussing it with your doctor. 
• Constipation – Drink a good amount of water and consume a diet rich in fiber such as green leafy vegetables, bananas, and oranges. Exercise daily and start using mild laxatives at bedtime, which act as stool softeners. 
• Hypotension – Hypotension is a potential side effect of Xatral LP 10mg Tablet 30 ‘S. People who are already receiving antihypertensive treatment are more vulnerable to developing hypotension. The person should take rest and stay in bed until the symptoms are gone.
