How to use Ospamox 500mg Tablet 12 ‘S?
- Ospamox 500mg Tablet 12 ‘S is available as tablets, chewable tablets, capsules, oral solution and as an injection, usually only given in the hospital.
- Usual dose of Ospamox 500mg Tablet 12 ‘S is 250mg to 500mg taken thrice daily.
- For children; the dose is usually lower. The correct dose is calculated using your child’s weight.
- Ospamox 500mg Tablet 12 ‘S can be taken before or after food.
- Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water (Do not chew or crush the tablet). If you find it difficult to swallow, you can break them into half and then swallow one piece after the other.
- For children and those who find it difficult to have tablets you will be prescribed Ospamox 500mg Tablet 12 ‘S in its liquid form. You will be provided with a plastic syringe or spoon, by your pharmacist, to help you measure out the correct dose.
- Make sure your doses are evenly spaced out throughout the day.
- To allow your body to adjust to the medication, your doctor will probably start you on a low dose of Ospamox 500mg Tablet 12 ‘S and then gradually increase it with time.

ADULTS
250 mg 3 times daily. In severe cases you may double the dose
- Otitis media: 500 mg every 8 hr.
- Severe or recurrent purulent RTI: 3 gm twice daily.
- Acute UTI: 3 gm repeated once 12 hr later.
- Gonorrhoea: 3 gm single dose.
- Dental abscess: 3 gm repeated once 8 hour later.
- Prophylaxis of endocarditis: single 3 gm dose one hr before dental procedure from which bacteraemia may arise. Repeat 6 hr later if necessary.
CHILDREN:
- Children over 5 yr: 250 mg 3 times daily. In severe cases double the dose.
- Prophylaxis of endocarditis:
- Under 5 yr, 750 mg;
- 5-10 yr, 1.5 gm.
(Both 1 hr before dental procedure from which bacteraemia may arise)

Contraindications
Please inform your doctor if you have a history of any before using Ospamox 500mg Tablet 12 ‘S:
- Hypersensitivity (allergy) to penicillins, cephalosporins or other beta-Lactams – allergic reaction indicated by skin rash, swelling around face area, wheezing, chest tightness and breathing difficulty
- History of Ospamox 500mg Tablet 12 ‘S associated or penicillin associated jaundice or hepatic (liver) dysfunction.
- Infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever caused by EBV virus).
- Liver problems
- Kidney problems
- have recently had, or are about to have, any vaccinations as it may decrease the effectiveness of the vaccine.
- Liquid form is not suitable for people with a rare inherited condition called phenylketonuria as it may contain aspartame which may be harmful for you.
Precautions
Please tell your doctor about any of the following conditions while using Ospamox 500mg Tablet 12 ‘S:
- Renal (kidney) impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min) – monitor kidney function
- Hepatic (liver) impairment – monitor liver function
- Monitor haematological (blood-related) function in neonates
- Risk of crystalluria (cloudy urine) with high doses, patients should be well hydrated. Do not dilute syrup below half-strength
- Renal impairment (kidney damage)
- Infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever caused by EBV)
- Risk of acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis (inflammatory skin condition resulting in large fluid-filled blister-like areas) – in such a case, discontinue permanently
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- If you are about to undergo surgery
Interaction with other medications
