Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S is prescribed for the treatment and prevention of gallstones and primary biliary cholangitis. Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S may even be prescribed for hepatobiliary diseases that are associated with cystic fibrosis in patients aged 6 years and above.

Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S is to be ingested daily with plenty of water to help aid the passage of the tablet/capsule through the throat. It’s advised to not stop treatment with Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S without consulting a physician. The tablet/capsule is meant to be ingested whole without opening it or crushing it.

The dosage of Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S is dependent upon the patient’s age, medical condition, patient’s response to the drug, any medications patient might be having along with Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S and any adverse effects felt by the patient. It is recommended that patients ingest Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S at the same time each day and put an alarm as a reminder if needed.

Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S is not prescribed to pregnant and/or lactating patients. A lower dosage of the drug may be prescribed to elderly patients with other illnesses (such as kidney and liver impairment). The intake of alcohol is prohibited while undergoing treatment with Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S as it may cause dizziness

The exact mechanism of action of Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S is unknown, but studies have shown that Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S effectively lowers the levels of cholesterol by decreasing the production and secretion of cholesterol from the Liver. Adult Dosage

Dosage for patients aged 18 years and above is entirely dependent upon each patient’s weight.

Gall Stones 2-3 capsules/tablets may be prescribed to be ingested; daily by patients aged 18 years and above. The dose may be divided to be ingested throughout the day, preferably with meals.

Primary Biliary Cirrhosis: 2-5 capsules/tablets may be prescribed to be ingested; daily by patients aged 18 years and above. The dose may be divided to be ingested throughout the day, preferably with meals.

Child Dosage

Dosage for patients aged 18 years and below is entirely dependent upon each patient’s weight.

Gall Stones:  8-10mg of Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S is prescribed per kg of body weight to help dissolve cholesterol-rich gallstones. The Dose may be divided into smaller doses that may be ingested throughout the day, preferably with meals.

Cystic Fibrosis: 20mg of Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S is prescribed per kg of body weight, at the start of treatment; this dose may increase (up to 30mg per kg) or decrease during the treatment depending upon the patient’s symptoms and needs. The Dose may be divided into smaller doses that may be ingested throughout the day, preferably with meals.

Elderly Dosage 

Dosage for patients aged 65 years and above, is entirely dependent upon each patient’s weight and any other disease that the patient might be suffering from.

Pregnancy Use And Lactation

Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S is deemed unsafe to be prescribed to pregnant and breastfeeding women. If you are undergoing treatment with Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S and become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately, the doctor will ask you to stop using Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S.

Contraindications

Please tell your doctor if you have a history of any of the following before using Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S:

  • Allergic reaction to Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S or any other drug or ingredient
  • Moderate to severe diseases or impairment of the biliary tract 
  • Moderate to severe diseases or impairment of the Gall bladder
  • Moderate to severe diseases or ulcers of the gastrointestinal tract and/or stomach

Precautions

Interactions With Other Medications

  • Cholestyramine 
  • Colestipol

Common Adverse Effects

Like most medicines, Ursofalk Capsule 1 ‘S has certain side effects which include:

  • Stomach problems (such as nausea, and diarrhea)
  • Dizziness 
  • Fatigue 
  • Headache

How To Cope With Some Of The Adverse Effects

  • Headaches- In which case make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Avoid the use of alcohol. Take a prescribed painkiller. Consult your doctor if the headaches last longer than a week or are severe
  • Feeling or being sick (nausea or vomiting) or diarrhea –Avoid eating rich or spicy food. It might help to take medication after food. If you are sick, try drinking small, frequent sips of water.
  • Feeling dizzy (lightheaded) or weak –If the medication makes you feel dizzy or weak, stop what you’re doing and sit or lie down until you feel better, and do not rise too fast or immediately from a sitting or lying down position to a standing posture. Do not drive or use tools or machinery in case of any of these effects.
  • Muscular Aches And Pains- A hot or cold compress can be placed at the area of discomfort to bring relief; an over-the-counter pain reliever such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can be ingested to bring ease as well. Avoid high-intensity exercise while suffering from muscular pain.
  • Fatigue- Patients experiencing this adverse effect, are advised to take deep breaths, intake tea or coffee, get a good night’s rest, and not overburden themselves for a few days.
