Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S is used to prevent and treat stomach and/or intestinal ulcers. It can also relieve heartburn from acid reflux by decreasing the amount of acid being secreted in the stomach. Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S is chemically composed of Cimetidine. It is taken orally according to the dosage prescribed by a doctor. Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S is commonly taken once or twice a day. To prevent symptoms, it is taken 15 to 60 minutes before consuming food and/or drinks that may cause heartburn. Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S provides instant relief within an hour after consuming, unlike other antacids which may take several days to be fully effective. Its effectiveness may last up to 12 hours. Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S is an antagonist of H2 receptors responsible for acid secretion in the stomach. How Does Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S work

Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S has an antagonist effect on the H2-receptor located on the Gastric Parietal cell located in the stomach, blocking Histamine effects, this inhibition results in decreased gastric acid secretion in the stomach.

Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S also causes inhibition of Cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver responsible for drug metabolism and detoxification of foreign agents. This enzyme can be inhibited by drugs resulting in interactions among different medicines, producing side effects and decreased therapeutic effects. 

How To Use Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S

Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S is available as

  • Tablet – 400 mg
  • Suspension -100 mg/ 5 ml

Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S is taken orally with a glass of water, in the dosage prescribed by your doctor. Do not take more than recommended. Doses are individualized, which may be single (once daily) or divided doses (commonly morning and at night doses) as per the patient’s condition. The oral suspension contains 100 mg of cimetidine per 5 ml and is commonly prescribed to children.

Adult Dose

Following doses are generally recommended for the given conditions:

Prevention of Heartburn/ indigestion/ dyspepsia: 1 tablet 30-60 minutes before meals or a meal likely to trigger acid reflux and gastric pain.

Gastric ulcers/ GERD: 1 tablet- 400 mg orally at an interval of 12 hours, usually in the morning and at bedtime.

Duodenal ulcers: 1 tablet- 400 mg at bedtime

Maintenance of healing ulcers:  Once daily after your last meal of the day or at bedtime.

Avoid taking more than 2 tablets in a day unless advised by the doctor. The maximum safe dose must not exceed 2.4 grams (2400 mg) in a day. 

Pediatric Dose

Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S should not be given to children under 12 years. The recommended dose is 20-40 mg/kg for GI ulceration in divided doses, commonly twice a day. Avoid using household spoons, a calibrated spoon available with Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S must be carefully measured to take out Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S, usually one spoonful or as advised. 

Geriatric Dose

Due to potential side effects, Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S is not recommended for use in elderly patients. 

Contraindications

Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S should be avoided in following conditions:

  • Allergy to the contents of Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S 
  • Gastrointestinal cancer
  • Hepatic insufficiency
  • Renal impairment 

Precautions

While taking Cimet 400mg Tablet 100 ‘S caution must be exercised under the following conditions:
