Elocon Ointment 5 gm is a topical corticosteroid. It is used to treat skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, allergies, and rash. The active ingredient of the Elocon Ointment 5 gm is mometasone furoate. It is a medium-strength corticosteroid. Elocon Ointment 5 gm is available in cream, ointment, and lotion form. Your physician will recommend which form of the Elocon Ointment 5 gm is suitable according to your skin type and condition. 

Elocon Ointment 5 gm is used for external use only and should not be taken by mouth. Elocon Ointment 5 gm is applied on the surface of the skin to reduce redness and itchiness caused by irritants. Elocon Ointment 5 gm is contraindicated in people who are allergic to the active ingredient. Side effects such as inflammation, itching, allergic skin reactions, and loss of skin color are common. 

The Elocon Ointment 5 gm has anti-pruritic, anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictive properties. The mechanism is unclear however the corticosteroid is thought to act by the induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins.

How Does Elocon Ointment 5 gm Work

{{product’s}} mechanism of action is unclear. The Elocon Ointment 5 gm has anti-inflammatory, anti-pruritic and vasoconstrictive properties. However, it is thought they act by the induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins which are known as lipocortins. These proteins control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation.

How To Use Elocon Ointment 5 gm

Cream and Ointment:

Before application of Elocon Ointment 5 gm wash and dry the area. Apply a thin layer of Elocon Ointment 5 gm cream, ointment, or lotion. Gently rub in and do not cover the affected area with bandages. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and wounds. Use as prescribed by a doctor and use it at the same time each day for better results. 

Lotion:

Apply a few drops of Elocon Ointment 5 gm lotion to the affected areas once daily and massage daily and lightly until it disappears. For effective use, hold the bottle nozzle very close to the affected areas and gently squeeze. 

Dosage

Adults

The recommended application on affected skin areas is reviewed once or twice daily for a maximum of four weeks. 

Children

The recommended application dose on affected skin areas is once or twice daily for a maximum of four weeks and then review weekly. Elocon Ointment 5 gm cream and ointment may be used in pediatric patients 2 years of age or older. 

Pregnancy and Lactation

During pregnancy Elocon Ointment 5 gm should only be used when it is needed. It should be used when the benefits outweigh the risks.

It is unknown if the Elocon Ointment 5 gm passes into the breast milk. Consult your doctor before using breastfeeding. 

Contraindications

Inform your doctor if you have a history of any of the following before using Elocon Ointment 5 gm:

• Allergic to active ingredients of Elocon Ointment 5 gm.

Use of Elocon Ointment 5 gm can worsen the following skin problems:

• Rosacea (a skin condition affecting the face)
• Acne
• Skin atrophy
• Dermatitis
• Genital itching
• Nappy rash
• Cold sores
• Chickenpox
• Shingles
• Warts
• Ulcerated skin
• Wounds 

Precautions

Inform your doctor about any of the following conditions before using Elocon Ointment 5 gm

• Skin atrophy
• Broken, inflamed, or occluded skin
• Psoriasis
• Dermatitis
• Risk of visual disturbances in elderly 
• Delayed growth and development in children

Interactions With Other Medications

• Fexofenadine
• low-strength aspirin
• Fish oil (omega-3)
• Atorvastatin
• Vitamin B12
• Vitamin C
• Vitamin D3
• Cetirizine
• Montelukast
• Acetaminophen

Adverse Effects

Like most medicines, Elocon Ointment 5 gm has certain side effects which include:

• Inflammation or infection of hair follicles
• Burning sensation of the skin
• Itching
• Erythema
• Dryness
• Folliculitis
• Hypertrichosis
• Pruritis
• Hypo-pigmentation
• Peri-oral dermatitis
• Numbness of fingers
• Maceration of the skin
• Acne
• Striae
• Stinging and cracking of the skin

How To Cope With Adverse Effects

Thinning of Skin- Using creams that contain vitamin A also known as retinol may help to prevent skin from thinning further. Retinol creams are available over the counter. 

Burning sensation and Itching- Use of a moisturizer and a gradual increase in the dose of topical Elocon Ointment 5 gm are recommended for the prevention of burning sensation and itching. 

Skin Rash-  Can be eased by applying soothing and healing lotions or creams such as calamine lotion/cream. Apply a cold compress to the rash helps reduce itchiness and redness caused by the rash. An antihistamine (prescribed by a doctor) is also recommended as an effective way to combat any skin rash.

Redness Of The Skin- Can be combated by applying a cold pack to the affected area.

Local Skin Infection-  A local skin infection can be treated by specific antibiotics.

Keep out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use {{PRODUCT}} after the expiry date which is stated on the box. Store between 15ºC – 30ºC. Discard open tubes 90 days after opening, even if they are not empty. They should not be kept for future use.
