Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml belongs to a class of drugs called “beta-lactam antibacterials/penicillins” (broad spectrum antibiotics) that is used to treat bacterial infections, such as chest infections (including pneumonia), UTIs (urinary tract infections and dental abscesses. In children, it is used to treat chest infections and ear infections. 

Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml is an antibiotic from the penicillin group of medicines that works by preventing the formation of the protective bacterial wall, essential for the survival of the bacteria.

It is available on prescription, as tablets, chewable tablets, capsules, oral solution and as an injection, usually only given in the hospital. Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml is best prescribed treatment of bacterial infections in patients who are not allergic to Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml or penicillin groups of drugs. 

Common side effects of this medication are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and a rash in response to an allergic reaction.

Dosage of Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml depends on age, severity of condition, patient’s response to medicine and their comorbidities. In children it is also based on their weight.

Indications

It is used in the treatment of:

• Infections of the respiratory tract (nose, throat, larynx, trachea, bronchi and lungs)
• ENT (eyes, nose and throat) infections
• Urinary tract infections
• Skin and soft tissue infections.
• Dental infections (dental abscesses – buildup of pus inside teeth and gums)
• Gonorrhoea (sexually-transmitted diseases)
• Prophylaxis of bacterial endocarditis (bacterial infection of the inner layer of the heart or heart valves).

Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml is an antibiotic from the penicillin group of medicines that works by preventing the formation of the protective bacterial wall, essential for the survival of the bacteria. 

How to use Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml?

• Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml is available as tablets, chewable tablets, capsules, oral solution and as an injection, usually only given in the hospital.
• Usual dose of Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml is 250mg to 500mg taken thrice daily.
• For children; the dose is usually lower. The correct dose is calculated using your child’s weight. 
• Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml can be taken before or after food.
• Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water (Do not chew or crush the tablet). If you find it difficult to swallow, you can break them into half and then swallow one piece after the other. 
• For children and those who find it difficult to have tablets you will be prescribed Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml in its liquid form. You will be provided with a plastic syringe or spoon, by your pharmacist, to help you measure out the correct dose. 
• Make sure your doses are evenly spaced out throughout the day. 
• To allow your body to adjust to the medication, your doctor will probably start you on a low dose of Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml and then gradually increase it with time.

ADULTS 

250 mg 3 times daily. In severe cases you may double the dose

• Otitis media: 500 mg every 8 hr.
• Severe or recurrent purulent RTI: 3 gm twice daily.
• Acute UTI: 3 gm repeated once 12 hr later.
• Gonorrhoea: 3 gm single dose.
• Dental abscess: 3 gm repeated once 8 hour later.
• Prophylaxis of endocarditis: single 3 gm dose one hr before dental procedure from which bacteraemia may arise. Repeat 6 hr later if necessary.

 

CHILDREN:

• Children over 5 yr: 250 mg 3 times daily. In severe cases double the dose.
• Prophylaxis of endocarditis:
  • Under 5 yr, 750 mg;
  • 5-10 yr, 1.5 gm. 

(Both 1 hr before dental procedure from which bacteraemia may arise)

Pregnancy use and lactation

If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, please consult your doctor before using Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml.

If you are breastfeeding, please consult your doctor before taking Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml. 

Contraindications

Please inform your doctor if you have a history of any before using Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml:

• Hypersensitivity (allergy) to penicillins, cephalosporins or other beta-Lactams – allergic reaction indicated by skin rash, swelling around face area, wheezing, chest tightness and breathing difficulty
• History of Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml associated or penicillin associated jaundice or hepatic (liver) dysfunction.
• Infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever caused by EBV virus).
• Liver problems
• Kidney problems
• have recently had, or are about to have, any vaccinations as it may decrease the effectiveness of the vaccine.
• Liquid form is not suitable for people with a rare inherited condition called phenylketonuria as it may contain aspartame which may be harmful for you. 

Precautions

Please tell your doctor about any of the following conditions while using Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml:

• Renal (kidney) impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min) – monitor kidney function
• Hepatic (liver) impairment – monitor liver function
• Monitor haematological (blood-related) function in neonates
• Risk of crystalluria (cloudy urine) with high doses, patients should be well hydrated. Do not dilute syrup below half-strength
• Renal impairment (kidney damage)
• Infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever caused by EBV)
• Risk of acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis (inflammatory skin condition resulting in large fluid-filled blister-like areas) – in such a case, discontinue permanently
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding 
• If you are about to undergo surgery 

Interaction with other medications

Certain medications could interact with Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml, hence, in that case your doctor might alter your dosage and make sure to monitor blood sugar levels more closely.

Please inform your doctor about the use of the following before taking Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml:

• Anticoagulants such as warfarin
• Allopurinol and probenecid (used to treat gout)
• Tetracyclines
• Methotrexate (used to treat cancer or rheumatic diseases)
• Other antibiotics

Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml may cause false positive results with certain diabetic urine testing products (cupric sulfate-type) and it may affect the result of certain lab tests.

• Joint or muscle pain that comes on after 2 days of taking Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml

• Nausea (feeling sick) – Take Maxil 125mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml with meals to avoid feeling sick.

• Vomiting/Diarrhoea – Keep yourself hydrated by having lots of fluids and if the problem persists, consult your doctor before taking any medication for vomiting and diarrhoea
