Overview

{{Product}} (Proparacaine) is a rapidly acting topical anesthetic that is used only by healthcare professionals to numb the eye before certain tests, short procedures, or surgery. The anesthesia lasts for about 10 to 20 minutes after the installation of Alcaine Eye 0.50% Drop 15 ml. The purpose of usage is to prevent pain during the procedure.

How Does Alcaine Eye 0.50% Drop 15 ml Work

{{Product}} contains Proparacaine as an active agent which is a local anesthetic and works by inhibiting the signals of pain at nerve endings of the eye. It blocks the ionic flux (sodium channels) needed to conduct impulses to perceive pain. 

Dosing and Indications

{{Product}} is indicated for procedures requiring a rapid and short-acting topical ophthalmic anesthetic.

Removal of foreign bodies, sutures, and tonometry

1 to 2 drops in single instillations right before the examination/operation

Short procedures e.g., cataract extraction & conjunctivitis procedures (Deep ophthalmic anesthesia)

1 drop in each eye after every 5 to 10 minutes for 5 to 7 doses

Suture Removal

1 to 2 drops two to three minutes before removal of stitches.

Side Effects

  • Temporary burning and stinging
  • Redness in the eye
  • Keratitis due to an immediate allergic reaction (rare)

Precautions

  • Prolonged use of any topical anesthetic is not recommended as it can damage the corneal layer leading to loss of vision.
  • The solution must be discarded if faint yellow or darker color is observed.
