Covate 0.05% Ointment 15 gm is a topical steroid that is prescribed to treat the inflammation and irritation produced by a variety of skin disorders, including allergic responses, eczema, and psoriasis. 

This medication is also used as a part of combination therapy.

Covate 0.05% Ointment 15 gm belongs to a group of drugs known as topical corticosteroids and mainly works by lowering your body’s inflammatory reaction.

Covate 0.05% Ointment 15 gm is available as a topical cream. A thin layer of this medication is to be applied on the skin with clean hands on the entire affected area once or twice a day (with at least a gap of 8-12hrs after using it) or as advised by the physician. Treatment with Covate 0.05% Ointment 15 gm should not last longer than four weeks. If treatment must be continued, a less strong formulation should be administered. 

Covate 0.05% Ointment 15 gm may produce certain side effects such as burning, itching, irritation, adrenal insufficiency, Cushing’s syndrome, etc.

Covate 0.05% Ointment 15 gm is an extremely potent topical corticosteroid suggested for the short-term treatment of more resistant inflammatory and pruritic symptoms of steroid-responsive dermatoses unresponsive to less potent corticosteroids in adults, the elderly, and children over the age of one year. These include the following:

  • Psoriasis
  • Recalcitrant dermatoses
  • Discoid lupus erythematosus
  • Lichen planus
  • Other skin disorders that don’t respond well to less powerful steroids

Covate 0.05% Ointment 15 gm contains Clobetasol which is a powerful corticosteroid with a super-high potency. 

This medication works by lowering your body’s inflammatory reaction and also lowers your immune system’s activity. This reduces irritation and itching while also treating your skin problem. 

How To Use Covate 0.05% Ointment 15 gm

A thin layer of Covate 0.05% Ointment 15 gm is to be applied on the skin with clean hands on the entire affected area once or twice a day (with at least a gap of 8-12hrs after using it) or as advised by the physician.

  • Allow enough time for each application to absorb before applying an emollient. 
  • Treatment with Covate 0.05% Ointment 15 gm should not last longer than four weeks. If treatment must be continued, a less strong formulation should be administered. 
  • A fingertip unit of cream should be enough to treat an area of skin twice the size of the palm of your hand as a general guideline. 
  • The appropriate amount of cream for newborns and children is determined by their age.
  • You can seek advice from a doctor or pharmacist.

To use Covate 0.05% Ointment 15 gm, follow the steps below: 

  • Wash your hands
  • Apply a thin coating of cream or ointment to the inflamed skin region. 
  • Smooth it gently into your skin in the direction of your hair growth. 
  • Make sure the cream or ointment doesn’t get into any cuts or broken skin. 
  • Afterward, wash your hands (unless you’re treating your hands). 
  • Apply the cream or ointment to all inflamed regions of the skin, not just the worst ones.

Adult dosage

Ages 18-64 years – Apply this medication twice a day (with at least a gap of 8-12hrs after using it) to the afflicted regions of your skin. Carefully rub it in. 

Child dosage

Ages 0-11 years – This medicine has not been proven to be safe or effective in children under the age of 12.

  • Covate 0.05% Ointment 15 gm is contraindicated for use in children under 1year of age.
  • If it was prescribed for a child under the age of 12, don’t give it to them for more than 5 days until the doctor sees them again. 

Ages 12-17 years – Apply this medication twice a day (with at least a gap of 8-12hrs after using it) to the afflicted regions of your skin. Carefully rub it in. 

Elderly dosage

Age 65years and older – An older adult’s kidneys, liver, and heart may not function as well as they once did. Your body may process medications more slowly as a result of this. As a result, a greater amount of medicine remains in your body for a longer period of time. This increases your chances of experiencing negative side effects. Your doctor may prescribe a lesser dose or a different treatment plan for you. 

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is little information about Covate 0.05% Ointment 15 gm use in pregnant women. If you’re pregnant or planning to get pregnant, talk to your doctor. Only use this medicine if the potential benefit outweighs the potential harm.
