Cef-OD 200mg Tablet 10 ‘S belongs to a class of drugs called “cephalosporins” (antibacterials) used in the treatment of bacterial infections. It is known to be a broad-spectrum antibiotic i.e it works against a wide range of disease-causing bacteria. This antibiotic is used to treat bacterial infections such as bronchitis (infection of the airway tubes leading to the lungs), gonorrhea (a sexually transmitted disease), and infections of the ears, throat, tonsils, and urinary tract. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold and flu). Therefore, using any antibiotic when it is not required may decrease its efficacy for future infections. On the other hand, some people might be allergic to penicillin antibiotics and hence will not be able to take Cef-OD 200mg Tablet 10 ‘S.

Cef-OD 200mg Tablet 10 ‘S is available on prescription, as tablets, chewable tablets, capsules, and a suspension (liquid) to be taken by mouth. It works by preventing bacteria from forming a protective cell layer called a cell wall, thereby killing them.  Dosage of Cef-OD 200mg Tablet 10 ‘S depends on age, the severity of the condition, patients’ response to the medicine, and their comorbidities. In children, it is also based on their weight. Common side effects of this medication are nausea, diarrhea, and indigestion (stomach ache). 

Indications

Cef-OD 200mg Tablet 10 ‘S is prescribed to adults and children from above 6 months of age.

It is used in the treatment of:

  • Infections of the respiratory tract (nose, throat, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs)
  • Urinary tract (UTIs), skin and soft tissue infections
  • Biliary tract infections  

All caused by sensitive organisms.

How to use Cef-OD 200mg Tablet 10 ‘S

Dosage form and potency

Cef-OD 200mg Tablet 10 ‘S is available in the following forms

  • Nonchewable tablets: 100mg, 200mg  (to be  swallowed whole with a glass of water, juice, or milk)
  • Chewable tablets:      100mg, 200mg     (chew these tablets completely before swallowing; do not swallow them whole. You may crush them before swallowing if you have trouble chewing)
  • Capsules: 400mg  (to be  swallowed whole with a glass of water, juice, or milk)
  • Suspension (liquid): Shake it well before each use to ensure the medicine is mixed evenly.This is available  as 100mg/5mL ,200mg/5mL , 500mg/5mL

Cef-OD 200mg Tablet 10 ‘S is usually taken with food (to avoid side effects) every 12 or 24 hours as prescribed by a doctor. Make sure to divide your doses evenly throughout the day. Do not miss any dose and complete the full course of treatment to avoid bacterial resistance in the future. It should be taken with meals to avoid side effects. 

Dosage 

Acute infections due to sensitive gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, upper and lower respiratory tract infection (Bronchitis),  uncomplicated urinary tract infection, and otitis media:

Adult Dose

400mg orally once daily 

or 200 mg twice daily at 12 hours interval 

Child Dose

  • 6-11 months: 75 mg daily
  • 1-4 years: 200-400 mg daily
  • 5-9 years: 200 mg daily
  • 10-17 years: 200-400 mg twice daily

Child dose depends on body weight. Following weight guidelines can be followed for dose calculation in children.

  • >12 yr or >45 kg: 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hour
  • <45 kg or >6 mth: 8 mg/kg once daily or 4 mg/kg every 12 hour

Uncomplicated gonorrhea 

Adult Dose

  400mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hr combined with either macrolide (such as azithromycin) or doxycycline for 1 week

Child Dose

Dosage is completely dependent on the age, the severity of the condition, the patient’s response to the medicine, and their comorbidities. Your doctor may vary your dosage to regulate your blood sugar levels.

6 months to 12 years: 8mg/kg once daily or 4 mg/kg every 12 hr

Elderly Dose

Doses must be adjusted keeping in mind comorbidities. Moreover, Cef-OD 200mg Tablet 10 ‘S is excreted mostly by the kidney, therefore while administering the drug to elderly patients (65 years and above) careful consideration must be given to renal function and creatinine clearance values while deciding upon the dose.

Contraindications

  • Allergic reaction to Cef-OD 200mg Tablet 10 ‘S – indicated by skin rash, swelling around the face area, wheezing, chest tightness, and breathing difficulty
  • Clostridium Difficle associated diarrhea
  • Renal failure
